How did you get started?
I was at a crossroad in my life and wondering what I direction I wanted to go. The thought of writing again, something I hadn't done since my youth, simply came to me and felt right. I began my first novel, finished it 5 months later and found a publisher a few months later. The rest, as they say, is history.
What type of writer are you? Do you plan ahead/plot or do you simply fly by the seat of your pants?
Until recently I've been a fly by the seat of my pants kind of gal, but since I've been writing Romantic Suspense, I've had to spend a great deal more time plotting. It's been quite a challenge!
Do you write best at a certain time of the day?
I prefer late at night, but my schedule doesn't permit it-unless I'm racing against a deadline then it's pretty much 24/7!
What type of writing schedule do you have?
I write and work on the promotional aspect of my writing career full time-about 8a.m.- 3p.m. five days a week followed by a few more hours in the evening and several more hours on weekends where I can squeeze in the time.
How do you handle life interruptions?
LOL . . . you mean there is a life out there? Seriously, with 2 active children-a Cheerleader and a Gymnast, my life is full of interruptions and crazy schedules, but I take it one day at a time and conquer obstacles as they come.
Do you get blocked? Any hints how to stave it off?
Nope, never, knock on wood. I wonder if there'll ever be enough time to tell all the stories that keep coming to me, demanding a turn.
What authors do you look to as a role model and inspiration?
I find inspiration in each and ever writer I've ever met, published or not. I hear so many people say "Oh, I've always wanted to write . . ." but those who actually do it, putting in blood, sweat and tears to achieve a dream, I admire.
What's the best advice you ever received?
Write what you love.
What sparks a story?
I usually receive a line of dialogue from a character (yes, in my head-they speak to me!) and I have to stop and ask "Why are you telling me this? Who are you?"
What was it about your genre that interested you enough to choose to write in it and not in another genre?
The happily ever after, naturally, but also the journey to love, discovering emotions and going through trials of relationships. Falling in love time and time again . . .
Have you seen an evolution in your writing? What steps did it take?
Oh yes. If I weren't evolving, neither would the characters.
What have you always dreamed of writing, but haven't yet?
Each book has been a dream, and the next is just waiting to be fulfilled. I couldn't ask for more.
What one thing do you like most about writing? Least?
The journey, the discovery, the joy. The journey, the discovery, the joy <g>. It takes a lot of time and energy to bring a novel to life and I both love it and despair it. It's emotional and thrilling and fulfilling and exhausting.
What is your next project?
I recently acquired agent representation on another romantic suspense (my first suspense, Escapade for One was released April 2003), have recently sold a novella to Red Sage Publishing (writing as Dominique Sinclair) and am working on another romantic suspense. I always have several projects in the works at any given moment.
What advice would you pass along at this point in your career?
Just do it.
