Anice is a Scotswoman in the English world of Henry I, in the early 12th century, destined to marry an English (Norman) lord at her king's command. Malcolm is a Scotsman determined to marry an English bride to further his family's ties to the English, as well as advance his fortune. So when these two meet-as Anice descends her bed sheet rope to avoid her king's unwanted advances-they have no interest in each other. Or so they think.
Besides, Anice has a bad, bad history with fiancés. Those who haven't ended up dead have been exiled-and Malcolm isn't sure he wants to risk his future on a temperamental vixen. And then there's her witchy ability to know the future-or at least some aspect of it. Women have been killed for less. No, better stick with the original plan and find an English bride, Malcolm thinks.
This book is a romp through England just after the Norman Conquest. As far as I can tell, it's historically accurate. And though Anice has probably more independence than most women did at the time, her independent streak makes for a far more interesting heroine than she'd otherwise be. This one would make great vacation reading-fun to read, but nothing you really have to think hard about. If you like Diana Gabaldon, you'll like this one too.
