Dr. Drew Cooper cannot believe she let her sister Tiffani talk her into attending a Farthest Space convention. Drew is a Ph.D. and is an English literature professor at the local college and is built like a centerfold with a model's face that makes it a problem for people to take her seriously.

Tiffani who has brought her one-year-old daughter with her wants to get Max Sinclair to sign some books for the bookstore where she works. Drew doesn't read science fiction and has pictured Max Sinclair as some sort of geek looking person. She is making disparaging remarks about him when he walks up and speaks to her.

Maxfield Sinclair lives in Swift Creek, Virginia and has been writing Farthest Space books about ten years. He wondered why she is at the convention if she isn't a fan. Some of the fans are dressed as characters from his book but he noticed a fan dressed as Va'ra, a gray-skinned alien from his books, watching them. The man has a weapon that looked like a particle weapon but when he fired it Max knew it was not a science fiction weapon. Drew is in the line of fire and he knocks her behind a table but he is shot when he gets the baby out of danger.

Drew visits him in the hospital to thank him for saving her niece and invites him to a barbecue at her house before Charity Rogers of Channel 9 interrupts them. The gunman escapes but Max has bigger problems because Tiffani has a crush on him but Max only has eyes for Drew.

Drew and Max think someone is stalking her and she has received an anonymous note she assumed was from her former boyfriend James Barton who teaches history at the college, but when Tiffani is run off the road while driving Drew's car it looks like more than stalking. Tiffani's ex-husband returns to town and complicates an already complicated situation. Max is trying to help Drew with her problem and distance himself from Tiffani when the threat against Drew escalates to a point that puts both their lives in danger.
