A Voice in the Night by GeorgeAnne Smith takes the reader on a journey through the tumultuous feelings encountered in relationships, both personal and spiritual. She also explores the variety of emotions evoked during the change of seasons and during the holidays. Healing and forgiveness are themes that tie together many of the poems. Smith also focuses on the lessons of life with an emphasis on the acceptance and appreciation of a higher power. The poems cover many topics from a failed relationship to a sick puppy to Pope John Paul II.

Sprinkled among the serious toned poems are lighter verses that are humorous; I even caught myself laughing out loud as I read a few, especially “Grocery Adventure”. In this poem, the reader is treated to a familiar scene of chasing grocery carts in a windy parking lot and resisting fattening samples to get to the rice cake aisle.

Smith bravely bears her soul in A Voice in the Night. I recommend this book of poetry to readers who enjoy inspirational poetry. Her poems provide reassurance that we are all part of a bigger picture and that each of us can lead a purposeful life guided by a higher power.
